Nan and I share your grief but also share the joy of knowing Jody. Nan enjoyed her years of teaching with her.
Jody passed away on Friday, January 25, 2019 at the Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah. Memorials may be directed to Elm Heights Care Center. A memorial service will be held in June.
Eleanor Jo "Jody" Foster Carrell was born October 14 1924, to Harry Denny Foster and Elizabeth Curlette (Hier) Foster in Marceline, MO. Enjoying growing up in the small town with her older brother Wallace "Wally" and and younger brother James "Jim", she was active with vocal music, cheerleading, and graduated from Marceline High School in 1942. Jody attended the University of Missouri in 1942 and '43 until WWII, when she starting working for the Santa Fe Railroad. As a telegrapher and "Report Operator", she worked 7 days a week during the War until the service men came home in 1945. Jody resigned her job with the Railroad, and returned to the University of Missouri.
Jody met Allen Carrell at the University after her return, and they were married August 29, 1948. They both graduated in 1949, and moved to Parma, MO where they both started their teaching careers, and raising a family. Jody and Allen moved to Shenandoah, IA in 1957, and in 1966 She returned to teaching 2nd grade in the Shenandoah School system for the next 20 years. Allen and Jody were married for 49 years, and had 4 children. Lynne (Richard) Schroeder of Lincoln, Patty Carrell (John Binderup) of Omaha, Allen "Skip" (Mary Jo) Carrell of Shenandoah, and Nancy (Mark) Hirschfeld of Minneapolis.
Jody was active with P.E.O., music, Hospital Auxiliary, various bridge groups, and the Congregational United Church. Jody and Allen enjoyed travel, from early trips to see family, to later more extensive travel in their retirement years. Jody's love of reading was a gift she always enjoyed sharing with family and her students.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Wally (1990), and her husband Allen (1997). She is survived by her brother Jim Foster, her children, six grandchildren: Jim and Tom Schroeder, Drew (Marie) and Sam (Ellie) Carrell. Jillian and Jacob Hirschfeld. Great grandchildren, Henry, Ben, and Charlotte Carrell.
Jody will always be remembered for her love and caring of others. She was especially gifted in her love of children, and touched many young lives during her years as a teacher.
I had the pleasure of getting to know Jody when I worked as a nurse at Elm Heights. She always had candy for staff and loved when I brought my boys in to visit. My prayers are with her family. She will be missed!
Sympathy to your family for your loss. Jody was such a nice lady always friendly and liked to visit.
I am grateful for memories of Jody! (And she and Alan’s family.) I send my sympathy to her family. Jody leaves a legacy of all things meaningful; an inspiration to many.
Skip & family, we are so sorry to hear of your loss. Our thoughts are with your family.
I was so saddened by the news of Mrs. Carrell's passing. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to write her several years ago and thank her for everything she did for me as a student. In the letter, I told her she was one of the reasons I went into education spending 28 years as a teacher and administrator. I know she has left me with some wonderful memories, like singing "The Red Red Robin" and I know she has left all of the family with many more beautiful memories. God Bless all of you.
